Five Things We Learned Deploying AI in 300 Enterprise SOCs

We have now deployed Alaris in more than 300 enterprise SOC environments, across industries ranging from critical infrastructure to healthcare to financial services. Every deployment teaches us something. Most of what we've learned doesn't show up in vendor datasheets or case studies, it's the friction, the surprises, and the second-order effects that only become visible at scale. Here are the five most important lessons.

Lesson 1: Trust Is the Actual Deployment Challenge

Every deployment team expects the technical integration to be the hard part. In reality, the integration is the easy part. The hard part is getting security teams to trust an AI system with decisions that they've spent their careers believing only humans should make.

This isn't irrational. Security analysts have been burned by automation before, by SOAR playbooks that fired incorrectly, by correlation rules that caused false escalations, by automated responses that made things worse. The instinct to maintain human control is a product of real experience.

What we've learned is that this trust has to be built through demonstrated accuracy, not through assurances. The most successful deployments spend the first two to four weeks in a shadow mode where the AI makes dispositions but humans verify them. When analysts see that the AI is right 95%+ of the time, trust accelerates rapidly.

Teams that went through the shadow-mode trust-building phase reached full autonomous operation 40% faster than teams that tried to skip it, and reported significantly higher satisfaction with the system at 6 months.

Lesson 2: Start With Full Autonomy, Not Monitoring

Counter-intuitively, deployments that start with full autonomous alert triage from day one, after the shadow-mode phase, outperform deployments that gradually expand autonomy over time.

The reason is behavioral: when analysts know that only 10% of alerts are being autonomously handled, they continue treating their alert queue as their primary workload. When 95% of alerts are being handled autonomously and only genuine investigations reach them, they shift their operating model entirely. Partial autonomy creates partial adoption.

This requires organizational confidence in the deployment, specifically, confidence from security leadership that they understand what the system is doing and why. Teams that achieved this confidence early consistently outperformed teams that treated AI autonomy as something to be incrementally earned.

Lesson 3: Response Integration Is More Valuable Than Detection

Most organizations come to Alaris because they want better detection. What they discover is that the biggest value driver is response integration.

The reason: detection at most organizations is already pretty good. The alerts are there. The problem is that the path from detection to containment involves so many manual steps, investigating, verifying, documenting, escalating, approving, executing, that by the time action is taken, the attacker has moved on.

SOCs that integrated Alaris with their response stack in the first 30 days of deployment saw 3x larger reductions in mean time to contain than teams that focused on detection first. The detection was already working. The bottleneck was the human handoffs between detection and response.

We thought we had a detection problem. After six months with Alaris, we realized we had a response problem. Detection was finding things. Response just wasn't keeping up. That realization changed how we thought about everything.

Lesson 4: Alert Volume Reduction Is a Misleading Metric

Every customer wants to measure success by how many alerts dropped. And alert volumes do drop dramatically, 85–95% in most deployments. But alert volume reduction is a proxy metric, and a misleading one.

What actually matters is analyst time spent on high-value work. A SOC where analysts are spending 80% of their time on genuine investigations, threat hunting, and security engineering is a dramatically better security posture than one where they're spending 80% of their time triaging alerts that turn out to be false positives, regardless of what the alert volume numbers say.

The teams that track analyst time allocation before and after deployment, rather than alert volumes, consistently report higher satisfaction, better retention, and more meaningful security improvements. The metric matters.

Lesson 5: The Second-Order Effects Are Real

After a year of full deployment, the most interesting changes happening in our customer SOCs aren't the ones we designed for.

Analyst skill levels are rising faster than in comparison teams. When analysts spend their time on complex investigations instead of routine triage, they accumulate more valuable experience more quickly. Teams that have been running Alaris for 18+ months have measurably stronger tier-2 and tier-3 capabilities than comparable teams at peer organizations.

Threat hunting programs are being stood up for the first time. At organizations where security teams previously had no capacity for proactive hunting, analyst time freed up by AI triage is being invested in structured threat hunting programs, finding threats that were never generating alerts at all.

One customer we've worked with for 22 months launched a formal threat hunting program six months into their Alaris deployment. In the first year of that program, they found and contained four significant threats, none of which had generated a single alert in their detection system.

The best outcome of AI-native security operations isn't better metrics. It's organizations that are meaningfully better at security, building capabilities they never had time to develop before.
